Dark circles can also be known as tear troughs. This is the area below the eye which can look like it has a shadow or appear sunken. The skin can also have a purple or blue tinge or in some darker skin tones the skin can look browner under the eye. This can make us look tired and old.
There are a number of causes of dark circles.
As we age our skin loses the ability to produce collagen and therefore becomes thinner. The thinner skin exposes the muscles and blood vessels underneath which gives it the purple/ blue tinge.
Also, due to ageing we lose the fatty pillows of support in our cheeks. As the fat shrinks the cheeks flatten and this gives a more sunken and hollow appearance to our under eyes.
Finally, the skin can have a darker discolouration (brown tinge) due to pigmentation. This is more common in darker skin tones but can also be caused by rubbing your eyes frequently if you suffer with allergy’s.
A high-quality dermal filler is used to fill any hollowing under the eyes. This reduces the shadow and makes the under eyes look brighter and younger. Not everyone is suitable for this treatment so I always assess suitability prior to treatment.

If the dark circles are caused by the skin being thin or by pigmentation, polynucleotides are the recommended treatment. They are like an injectable moisturiser but with extra power! They have many benefits which include: an anti-inflammatory effect, reducing pigmentation, improving circulation, improving mild hollowing, producing more collagen and hydration. This results in your under eyes looking brighter, smoother and more even in skin tone.
