Tear trough treatment using dermal fillers

Tear trough treatment with Dr Amy Law

The eyes are extremely prominent and offer a visual ‘draw’ to the face. They can tell us a lot about a person’s emotions, health and wellbeing. Youthful looking eyes tend to have minimal lines and maintain a smooth and bright complexion. As we age, or if we are tired, stressed or experience certain medical conditions, the area around the eyes can become compromised. Under the eyes we can develop bags (sometimes due to fat pads moving south in this area) and dark circles, along with fine and deeper lines and wrinkles. So, how can we combat problems with the under eye appearance in a quick, minimally invasive and non-surgical treatment?

What are dermal fillers for the tear trough area?

Dermal fillers are injectable substances which contain hyaluronic acid (HA), a compound which is found naturally in the body, and is responsible for cushioning and hydrating various tissues. As we age, HA is depleted quite rapidly and this can result in all sorts of dermal concerns, from lines and wrinkles, to dryness and dehydration of the skin. Loss of HA also contributes to a lack of collagen production as we get older and this can further exacerbate the signs of ageing. When injecting a specifically formulated dermal filler in to the tear trough area, the bags under the eyes can look diminished and dark circles can be disguised (depending on what caused them in the first place). What’s more, fine lines and wrinkles can be reduced and the overall skin quality improves, looking more hydrated, fresher and youthful.

Who can administer dermal filler tear trough treatments?

Although non-medics are able to perform injectable treatments using dermal fillers, we do not recommend this at all. Dermal fillers are deemed ‘medical devices’ and if they are injected incorrectly, they can cause devastating problems. The delicate eye area is extremely complex and only medical professionals will have had the extensive training and skills to inject a dermal filler in to this area. This is why we recommend that you only enlist a medical professional, such as Dr Amy Law, to administer your tear trough, dermal filler treatment.

When will I see the results?

Some results can be seen immediately, as the dermal filler physically plumps out the tear trough crease and can disguise dark circles, however, allow around 4-6 weeks to see optimum results, as in this time any bruising or swelling will have subsided and the product would have integrated fully within the dermal tissues.

Am I suitable for a tear trough treatment with dermal fillers?

Most patients with under eye bags, lines and wrinkles and dark circles can benefit from dermal fillers around the eye area, however, before a treatment can be administered by Dr Amy Law, she will advise you to attend a no obligation consultation and facial analysis. This allows you to describe what is bothering you about your eyes and to disclose your medical history, so that the doctor can determine whether dermal fillers will be both effective and safe for you to undergo. She will explain treatment protocols, aftercare and the estimated results and their longevity. Once you are both satisfied that dermal fillers will be a safe and suitable option for your concern, you can go ahead and book your treatment session.

Frequently asked questions

What happens during a tear trough treatment using dermal fillers?

Some topical anaesthetic may be applied to the area to be treated, depending on your tolerance levels. Once this has taken effect, the cream will be removed and your skin will be cleansed and sterilised. The doctor will then use a cannula (a blunt ended needle) to inject small amounts of a specific dermal filler in to the area/s to be treated. Once this is completed, you will be able to return to your daily activities, although some aftercare is required, such as:-

  • Avoiding hot baths, steam, saunas and swimming for a week after the treatment
  • Avoiding rubbing or touching the area after treatment for 24 hours
  • Maintaining good hydration for the skin (i.e. drink lots of water) after the treatment, so the HA can take on water and in-turn replenish the skin
  • Avoid taking Ibuprofen or any medication known to exacerbate bruising before or after the treatment

Does a tear trough filler treatment hurt?

As a topical anaesthetic cream is applied before the treatment and as most dermal fillers now contain Lidocaine, the treatment should not be painful at all. You might feel some strange sensations of pulling or tugging as the cannula is inserted and guided through the skin tissues, but this is most tolerable and should not hurt.

Is there any downtime after a tear trough treatment using dermal fillers?

You may experience some swelling and slight bruising after your dermal filler tear trough treatment and this is quite normal. This should subside in a few days to a week.

How long will my tear trough treatment results last?

This is dependent on your individual response to HA dermal fillers and how your body metabolises the product. If you take care of your skin and avoid UV exposure, if you do not smoke and if you exercise moderately but not excessively, expect your results to last between 6 to 12 months. Some patients experience results that can last even longer, but again, this is dependent on your unique response to the product and the HA contained within it.
