Melasma is form of skin pigmentation which affects adults. It causes patches of brown/ greyish pigment to develop on the body but particularly the face (forehead/ cheeks/ chin).
It’s related to hormonal changes and most commonly affects women, particularly during pregnancy and menopause. It is also more common in people of colour who tan very quickly but it can occur to anyone.
It is more noticeable in the summer months due to the increase sun exposure which triggers melasma. It therefore does improve during winter when people are less likely to be exposed to the sun.
Melasma can be a difficult pigmentation to treat and whilst we cannot cure it, we can reduce the appearance of it and prevent it from being as visible. It requires a combination of home medical grade skincare and in clinic treatments.
The first step is getting you on an strict home skin care regime using Obagi Medical products which contain key ingredients to lighten the dark spots and prevent them from returning.
