The corner of the mouth is where the upper and lower lips meet. The line or indentations that we see in this area is commonly referred to as a downturned mouth.
There are several causes of a downturned mouth:
Volume loss in the cheek and lower face
Lower face muscles (depressor angulis oris muscle) pulling the corner of the mouth down- these pull stronger as we get older due to fat loss on our face
Collagen loss from the skin causing the skin to lose its elasticity and sag.
As these folds occur naturally with ageing, it is important to find out what’s caused them and build the correct foundations to achieve the most natural looking result. Every patient’s treatment plan will vary depending on their age and the severity of their folds. It often involves a subtle amount of cheek filler to lift the face and possibly filler into the folds itself or surrounding structures.
Anti-wrinkle injections can also help compliment dermal filler treatment to soften the downturned mouth especially when it is worsened by a strong lower face muscle contraction. This will be assessed and discussed during your consultation.
