Acne scarring is caused by severe acne which is left untreated. This can lead to the skin texture becoming uneven. The scars either look like holes in the skin (atrophic scars) or can be raised (hypertrophic scars).
Acne scarring is caused when the acne penetrates deeper within the skin and damages the delicate tissue under the epidermis. The bodies healing response is to produced collagen but too much or too little collagen can result in scarring
The risk of scarring will drastically increase when there is more trauma to the area, especially if the acne is very red and inflamed or when the acne is popped and squeezed.
Acne scarring can feel very frustrating and cause a lot of embarrassment but I want to reassure you that there are treatments out there that can improve their appearance.
I would always recommend a course of micro-needling and chemical peels which will reduce the appearance of the scars. This is best teamed with medical grade skincare to prevent future acne outbreaks which may lead to more scarring.
